MARVEL Tōkon Mechanics: Defense, Assists and Switching

Understand what each team and defensive system does before combining assists, switches, counters, and match expansion.

Team Roles At A Glance

Character selection order is described as Leader, Shooter, Vertical, and Assault. The Leader is the active fighter you learn first. Third-party guides use Shooter for ground-level or ranged coverage and Vertical for upward or anti-air coverage, while the exact action depends on the character. Inspect Assault too rather than assigning a universal function from its name.

This page explains how the systems connect. Use Team Building when you need to decide which coverage jobs your lineup should fill.

Assists And Switching

On PS5, X calls an assist. Neutral or right selects the second teammate, down selects the third, and left selects the fourth. Direction plus L2 switches to the corresponding teammate. After a successful assist call, a brief Switch? prompt creates another opportunity to change control.

An assist lets a teammate act while the current fighter remains under your control; a switch makes the incoming teammate the controlled fighter. Learn one call first so the switch changes the plan deliberately. See How to Play for the full action reference.

Standing And Crouching Guard

The official PS5 guide documents back for standing guard and down-back for crouching guard. Start with those two defensive states before adding a team action. Guard is the baseline answer; Assemble Counter and Crossover are separate choices for their documented situations, not replacements for blocking.

Assemble Counter

On PS5, Square+X while not guarding performs Assemble Counter. The official guide describes a defensive backstep that counters if the opponent attacks during the maneuver. This does not establish an invulnerability window, a guaranteed punish, or a universal answer to pressure. Practice recognizing the non-guarding state and reset after each attempt.

Crossover While Guarding

The same PS5 buttons, Square+X, perform Crossover while you are guarding. Instead of the neutral backstep action, a teammate enters to interrupt the opponent and create a chance to respond. The guarding requirement is the key difference to remember. Do not infer timing windows, resource details, or guaranteed safety that the cited beginner material does not establish.

Match Expansion And Shared Systems

PlayStation's official hands-on explains that the four-character team shares one health bar and begins with the lead character under direct control. More controllable teammate options become available as match events occur. Because that source described a pre-release build, this guide does not present its old event list as an exhaustive current rule. Use Startup Battle's Assemble section for the current in-game sequence.

Shared health also explains why switching is not a separate-life rescue. A switch changes which fighter you control; it does not give that fighter an independent health bar. Learn the system before using character rotation as a defensive habit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What defensive mechanics should I learn first?

Learn standing and crouching guard first. Then separate Assemble Counter outside guard from Crossover while guarding, and practice one situation at a time.

What is the difference between an assist and a switch?

An assist calls a teammate action while you retain control of the current fighter. A switch changes which teammate you control, either through the direction input or the brief post-assist prompt.

Does every character have a separate health bar?

No. The official hands-on and direct gameplay evidence show one shared team health bar. Switching changes the controlled fighter, not the team's remaining health pool.

Continue with Combo Basics after the defensive and team-action distinctions are clear.
